Choosing a solar panel comes down to four things: efficiency, the two separate warranties, how the panel behaves in heat, and whether anyone will still be there to honour a claim. Price matters, but it is not the first question.
What actually matters when you compare panels
Efficiency and power output
Efficiency is the share of the sunlight hitting a panel that becomes electricity. Power output is what one panel produces under test conditions. Together they tell you how much generation you can fit into the roof space you have. Higher output panels mean fewer panels for the same result, which usually means a tidier install and less mounting hardware on your roof.
Product warranty and performance warranty
These are two different documents and quotes often blur them into one number. The product warranty covers the panel itself against manufacturing faults. The performance warranty covers output, and states how much of the panel's original rating it should still be producing at the end of the term. Read both before you compare two prices, because a long warranty on one line of a quote may not be the one you think it is.
How the panel handles heat
Panels lose output as they heat up, and a Bendigo roof in summer gets hot. The datasheet figure for this is the temperature coefficient. A smaller figure means less output given up on the hottest afternoons, which is exactly when your air conditioner is working hardest. It rarely comes up in a sales pitch and it is worth asking for.
Cell technology
Panel technology moves quickly, and the marketing names for it move faster than the technology does. What matters is how the specific model in your quote performs, not which acronym is on the brochure. Ask for the datasheet and compare like with like.
Whether the brand will still be here
A long warranty is only worth as much as the company standing behind it. Panel manufacturers do leave markets, and when they do, a warranty claim becomes very hard to make. It is worth choosing a brand with a real presence in Australia and a record of supporting the panels it has already sold.
Who honours the warranty locally
In practice a warranty claim starts with whoever installed the system. Ask who you would call, whether they are still trading locally, and whether they would handle the claim for you or hand you a manufacturer's email address. The Clean Energy Council maintains the approved product lists for panels, inverters and batteries, so check the panel you are quoted is on the list. Installer accreditation sits with Solar Accreditation Australia, so that is where to check the person doing the work.

Are more expensive panels always better
No. Past a certain point you are paying for a brand rather than for generation. The better test is whether the panel suits your roof, your shading and your budget, and whether the warranty is one you could realistically claim on.
How many panels will I need
Fewer than you might think. Today's 470 to 490 watt panels produce far more than older modules, so we get more from less roof space. The exact number comes from your bills and your plans, worked out in your assessment.
Do you have all-black panels
Yes. The Aiko all-black and Jinko black-frame panels in our range are popular picks for homes where looks matter.
Does the panel brand matter more than the inverter
